From Poverty to Prosperity
Poverty ends when livelihoods thrive. NHDA’s microloans, poultry cooperatives, and bicycle-for-business programs help women and farmers grow incomes. For example, egg-production projects provide steady revenue, while bicycles enable faster crop transport to markets. We link beneficiaries to financial literacy training and savings groups, transforming subsistence living into sustainable entrepreneurship.

How the Community Benefits
💰 Lifts households out of poverty with microloans and poultry projects.
🚲 Improves market access through bicycle transport for farmers.
🏦 Builds financial literacy with savings groups and training.
👨🌾 Diversifies livelihoods beyond subsistence farming.
Bicycles Project
In many rural parts of Uganda, students and health workers walk long distances—sometimes over 10 kilometers—to reach schools or health centers.
NHDA introduced the Bicycles Project to reduce this daily burden. The project provides bicycles to students at risk of dropping out and community volunteers who serve as health educators or caregivers.
With a bicycle, a student can reach school on time and with less fatigue, improving both attendance and academic performance. Community members use the bikes to carry goods to markets or transport sick family members to nearby clinics. It’s a simple yet powerful tool that boosts mobility, productivity, and access to essential services.
Goat Project
The Goat Project supports vulnerable households—especially widows, elderly caregivers, and families affected by disease—with livestock that can multiply and bring long-term benefits.
Each family receives at least one healthy goat, along with basic training on animal care and disease prevention.
Goats reproduce quickly, and within a year, a family can have several animals. This becomes a reliable source of income through the sale of young goats or milk. The manure also supports farming activities. NHDA encourages beneficiaries to pass on the first offspring to another family, creating a ripple effect of impact in the community.
Poultry Project
This project focuses on food security and income generation.
Selected families are given layer chicks, feeds, and basic training in poultry management. Once the hens mature and start laying eggs, the families can consume some for improved nutrition and sell the rest to earn income.
The project targets single mothers, people living with disabilities, and low-income households. NHDA also links beneficiaries to local markets and encourages cooperative models where small-scale farmers can pool resources for better returns. The Poultry Project builds household resilience and promotes economic independence.
Hoes for Development – Support to Farming Communities
Farming is the backbone of rural Uganda, yet many subsistence farmers still lack access to basic tools.
NHDA’s Hoe Distribution Project supplies thousands of hand hoes to farming families to help them cultivate their land more efficiently. This project is especially impactful during planting seasons when demand for tools is high.
The project is rolled out in partnership with local leaders to ensure the tools reach the right beneficiaries—elderly farmers, single mothers, youth groups, and widows. Alongside the distribution, NHDA also organizes community sensitization on improved farming techniques and encourages group farming initiatives to increase productivity and food security.
