The term emergency implies a short or limited duration, whereby people are temporarily in need of relief, but the realities of current disasters in Karamoja is quite the reverse; the Karamoja emergencies have lasted longer and have been characterized by widespread structural poverty making them almost permanent. In these situations, it is not enough to consider immediate survival needs, assistance is needed to support sustainable livelihoods and thereby promote self-reliance. Nile humanitarian development agency set out to Sangar subcounty Karenga district Karamoja region to distribute another lot of 200 food packages to 200 households that have been directly affected by the current famine in the region. This marks the organizations second food relief drive to the Karamoja region following the first one where the same relief items were distributed households in kapedo sub county. The number and size of emergencies are escalating at an alarming rate, and the number of people affected is greater than ever before. In many famine and conflict affected countries, relief projects may now reach anything from 10 to 40 percent of the population. In financial terms, food assistance is the single most important response of the international community to current emergencies. Appreciation to the donors for always thinking about the people of Uganda.
